Modern Literature of the 21st Century

0 0

It is interesting to observe how contemporary literature of the 21st century continues to develop the detective. It has become truly multi-faceted. Writers’ conveyor belts are producing a huge number of them for the reader’s curiosity, and will continue to do so. But besides detectives are becoming historical, ironic, fantastical, intellectual. Take, for example, the works of Dan Brown, Umberto Eco.

Then modern literature of the 21st century develops such heat as fantasy and sci-fi. But they are by no means in their pure form anymore, but reformatted, viewed from different angles and heavily branched out. Fantasy literature is now fruitfully collaborating with the computer game industry. Books are written based on the most famous computer games, and vice versa. And if we list the subgenres, we can distinguish: space opera, urban fantasy, cyberpunk, post-apocalyptic, steampunk, techno-fantasy, horror and gothic romance.

Realism continues to hold a strong position. But it has also branched out, and modern trends in literature are firmly mastered by its brothers: surrealism, critical realism, metaphorical realism, magical realism. The foundations laid by Borges, Marquez and Cortázar are being developed by new generations of writers such as Elfriede Jelinek, Goran Petrovic, Mario Vargas Llosa and others.

If we take autobiographical works, they have a special niche in modern literature of the 21st century. In fact, they are little read, they are not assembled into collections, and the artistic value of these works is low. The reason for this may also be that the great and famous people whose faces smile from the covers, for the most part, do not write these books themselves, but literary negroes work for them.

Literary anonymity is another thing that distinguishes modern literature in the 21st century. Anonymous texts roam the Internet. Anonymous writers write movie and TV series scripts. In addition to anonymity, new modern trends in literature are developing pseudonyms, which are also the essence of faceless individuals. This all leads smoothly to postmodernism.

Signs of postmodernism in literature are, first of all, eschatological mood, reevaluation of the aesthetic, mixing of styles, languages, cultures, ironic quotation of world artistic experience. Prominent representatives: Beigbeder, Palanec, Umberto Eco. And although modern trends in literature have already surpassed postmodernism and continue to go further, it still has a very strong position, especially among intellectuals.

Literature at the present stage is a huge chaos of books that even Jorge Borges himself could not manage. Therefore, in order to have a reliable compass, modern literature of the 21st century offers various reference books, almanacs, and ratings.
